My Story

I have always felt meditative in nature. The surroundings, the sounds of birds, wind, trees, flowers and fragrances all add to a meditative state. I feel a strong sense of connection and meaning. Looking at a larger picture in nature brings a healthy dose of perspective and helps me forget my own trivial problems.
When a busy life forced me to re-evaluate how I want to do photography and what I want to focus on, I chose flowers. Before that I was making images of whatever I could find in nature – landscapes, flowers, birds and animals. When I had to decide to focus on one subject, flowers, especially wildflowers were an obvious choice. Flowers are everywhere. They make everyone happy. The fragrances, arrangement of various parts, fragrances, colors and patterns are fascinate me. They always remind me of something pure, fresh and cheerful.
There was another reason why I chose flowers. They are easy to focus one’s attention on and easy to feel meditative when looking at them. With my background of more than 3 decades of mindfulness meditation practice, I also wanted to do photography in a meditative way, and flowers offered me an easy choice. As I started photographing flowers with a meditative mind more than 10 years ago, I was able to see flowers in a different way. When the mind becomes empty, it becomes easier to see a flower as it is without being colored by a thinking mind. With time, the process became more important than the final product. The process also brought me joy, relaxation, serenity and insights, which I usually used to feel after sitting meditation on a cushion.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation (Vipassana) comes from the Buddhist Theravada (Way of the elders) tradition. This practice involves focusing one’s attention on breath or body sensations to keep the awareness in the present moment. The methods can vary depending on the traditions and regions from which it is taught.

Most meditation techniques including Mindfulness have 3 major components – concentration, clarity and equanimity. These are described in later sections. Mindfulness involves non-judgmental awareness, i.e., accepting thoughts, body sensations and feelings without judgment.
